AS selar tindakan keras Russia terhadap penunjuk perasaan

- AFP

Russian police arrested hundreds of protesters on Sunday as activists took to the streets across the country demanding the release of jailed Kremlin critic, Alexey Navalny.

Security forces arrested Yulia Navalnaya, wife of Navalny, at a protest in Moscow, his supporters said on social media. OVD-Info, a monitoring group, said more than 300 people were arrested in the capital.

Navalnaya was also arrested at a similar demonstration in support of her husband last week.

The first rallies took place in the Far East, including the port city of Vladivostok where protesters gathered in the city’s central square despite police closing it off ahead of the rally.

Penentang rasuah Rusia dijel hampir tiga tahun

- Agensi

Police detained protesters gathered in Moscow's centre on Tuesday evening in support of jailed opposition activist Alexei Navalny.

Several separated columns of demonstrators marched along Tverskaya, Bolshaya Dmitrovka and Petrovka streets and gathered at Pushkinskaya and Manezhnaya squares.

Law enforcement officers could be seen detaining protesters after they repeatedly urged them to disperse the unauthorised rally. The crowd could also be seen running away from the police.

The official number of detainees has not been announced yet.

Mass events have been banned in Moscow and some other Russian cities due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Calls for the unauthorised action appeared on social media soon after Moscow's Simonovsky District Court ruled to revoke opposition activist Alexei Navalny's probation in connection with the 'Yves Rocher' case and replace it with a custodial sentence.

The court gave Navalny, who was sentenced to three and a half years in prison, a two-year and eight-month term considering his house arrest during the 2014 'Yves Rocher' investigation and detention from 17 January 2021.

The opposition activist said he shouldn't serve a real sentence under the 'Yves Rocher' case as the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg concluded that his actions didn't qualify as a crime and asked for his release in the courtroom.

The anti-corruption campaigner was taken into custody on January 17 upon his return to Russia from Germany, where he spent nearly five months recovering from an alleged Novichok nerve agent attack. On January 18, Navalny was sentenced to 30 days in jail for breaching parole conditions of a suspended sentence from a 2014 embezzlement conviction.

Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny's lawyer Olga Mikhailova commented on the verdict of Moscow's Simonovskiy court's which sentenced him to 32 months in prison on Tuesday. She said the defence will appeal against the ruling.

“For sure, we will appeal [the ruling]. In addition, we will inform the Cabinet of Ministers of the Council of Europe that the ruling they have made in October 2017 was not followed, moreover, according to this ruling, Alexei Navalny is now in custody and imprisoned,” she said.

The court gave Navalny, who was sentenced to three and a half years in prison, a two-year and eight-month term considering his house arrest during the 2014 'Yves Rocher' investigation and detention from 17 January 2021.

The Biden administration is 'deeply concerned' by Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny prison sentencing by a Russian court, said White House press secretary Jen Psaki, during a press briefing in Washington DC on Tuesday.

"We are deeply concerned by Russian authorities efforts, decision I should say, to sentence opposition figure Alexei Navalny. Like every Russian citizen, Mr Navalny is entitled to the rights provided in the Russian constitution. And Russia has international obligations to respect equality before the law and the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly," said Psaki.

"We reiterate our call for the Russian government to immediately, unconditionally release Mr Navalny, as well as the hundreds of other Russian citizens wrongfully detained in recent weeks for exercising their rights," she added.
