Transformers 5: Bumblebee’s Robot Mode & Head Design Revealed

Last week we visited the set of Transformers: The Last Knight and we’ll be able to share most of what we learned next week, including plenty of information on certain new and returning characters. Leading up to this day of reveals however, Paramount Pictures and director Michael Bay – returning for his fifth installment of the franchise he helped launch – have been sharing daily images of key characters from the film.

The focus last week was on newer Autobot characters from Transformers: Age of Extinction making their return (Drift, Crosshairs, and Hound) and then we got the all-new hero character Sqweeks followed by the all-new Barricade and Megatron designs earlier this week. Following up on the main Cybertronian characters, we just got our first look at the robot mode of Bumblebee.

Bumblebee’s alt mode, a custom-built 2016 Camaro (sponsored by GM), was revealed by Michael Bay back in June. Just as Bumblebee remains loyal to his Camaro in the live-action movies (sorry, Volkswagen Beetle), so to does he remain the loyal scout for Optimus Prime and the Autobots… just not Shia LaBeouf’s Sam Witwicky.

The overall design remains similar to all previous live-action incarnations, with the car doors serving as wing-like blades on the back, and the front of the car (headlights included) showing up on the chest. The noticeable augmentation comes with Bumblebee’s new combat mode helmet. He’s been able to close his face for protection in the past, but the new helm brings back bee-like inspirations, living up to his name, from Age of Extinction but streamlines the edges as opposed to having the spiky elements stick out.

And as we’ve discussed in our looks of all the character reveals so far, we dig the more alien, non-human face and body designs of characters like Bumblebee, Barricade, Optimus, and Megatron, as opposed to the weirdly too-human spoof-like designs of Crosshairs, Hound, and Drift.

The evolving head design also helps differentiate current-form Bumblebee from the returns-from-the-dead again Barricade, his rival from the original 2007 movie, who now has a more Bumblebee-like body shape and helmet himself.

Pay close attention to Bumblebee in the next movie, since he’s getting his own movie the following year. Don’t be surprised to see Transformers 5 directly setup his standalone story arc, whatever that may be.


Transformers: The Last Knight opens in U.S. theaters on June 23, 2017, followed by the Bumblebee spin-off on June 8, 2018, and Transformers 6 on June 28, 2019.
