Top Glove Jumps 21% as Omicron Variant Concerns Boost Outlook

Abhishek Vishnoi29 November 2021, 15:58 GMT+8
Top Glove Corp., the world’s biggest glove maker, surged on Monday to lead an advance in medical wear companies for a second session amid bets the emergence of the omicron coronavirus variant will boost demand for the industry’s products.

Top Glove Corp. jumped 21% in Malaysia, adding to Friday’s gains of 17%. Its peer Hartalega Holdings Bhd. advanced 13%, the most since January. Similar stocks listed in Singapore and Thailand also soared.

The two-day gains in glove makers are reminiscent of the eye-popping rallies seen by medical wear companies last year before vaccine rollouts, the economic reopening and forced labor allegations weighed on their outlook.

The sector was one of the hottest pandemic trades in 2020 but many of the glove producers more than halved in their market value this year.

“Demand growth and pricing won’t go back to 2020 levels but there will be some improvement especially if virus cases rise,” said Danny Wong, chief executive officer of Areca Capital Sdn.

Still, Wong warned that only smaller individual investors might be chasing glove stocks and the institutional money is yet to come in with conviction. He remains neutral on the sector.

The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI benchmark, which counts Top Glove and Hartalega as its members, outperformed the MSCI Asia Pacific Index on Monday for a second session in a row.

At one point last year, more than $1 of every $10 invested in the Malaysian stock market was a bet on gloves -- a feat that makes the Southeast Asian nation a play on global hygiene, much like South Korea and Taiwan are for semiconductors.

Top Glove sets eyes on bolstering its world leading position

Top Glove sets eyes on bolstering its world leading position
KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 31): Top Glove Corp Bhd aims to cement its position as the world’s leading glove manufacturer, as well as aspires to become a Fortune Global 500 company by 2030.

In response to questions from Bursa Digital Research on Dec 24, Top Glove said it intends to strengthen its leading position via a comprehensive strategy focused on five aspects.

The group said the five aspects are enhancing production capacity to meet global demand, expanding its presence in key strategic markets, technological improvement to drive product innovation and production efficiency, undertaking mergers and acquisitions, as well as broadening its product portfolio to adjacent and other non-glove products.

It noted that it plans to do this while maintaining focus on creating long-term value for its stakeholders in a responsible and sustainable way.

Top Glove said it aims to continue expanding its global market share via an incremental increase in its production capacity from 2022 to 2025.

“As at the date of publication (Dec 24), we have planned a capacity increase of 11% in 2022, 23% in 2023, 18% in 2024, and 24% in 2025.

“In addition, we will also continue to invest in research and development (R&D) to improve our production process to remain competitive in the long run,” it added.

Additionally, the glove manufacturer also said it aims to expand upstream as well, as it plans to build an NBR latex processing plant with a 200,000-tonne capacity, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

“We are also planning to build our own surgical gloves gamma sterilisation plant which is expected to be completed by the third quarter (3Q) of 2023 and targets to provide sterilisation service to one billion pieces of surgical gloves per annum,” Top Glove added.

Rubber glove raw material costs to normalise

Top Glove noted that it expects prices for one of the primary raw materials of its products — nitrile latex — to normalise in line with normalising rubber glove demand.

“In view of normalising glove demand, we believe that the price for nitrile latex will follow suit, as more supply for Butadiene comes online, coupled with lower demand from downstream production,” it said.

Meanwhile, the prices of natural rubber latex — the other primary raw material of rubber gloves — have already normalised, according to the group.

“On the other hand, the price for natural rubber latex concentrate has normalised after winter season ended,” it said.

At noon, Top Glove fell 2.87% or seven sen to RM2.37, valuing it at RM19.45 billion.

Top Glove chairman buys 1.5 million more shares as price dives to 29-month low

KUALA LUMPUR (May 12): Top Glove Corp Bhd executive chairman Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai has raised his stake in the rubber glove maker after buying more shares in the company, which has seen its share price fall to its lowest in over two years on broader market weakness and at a time when Covid-19-driven demand for glove is seen normalising as global vaccination progress leads to anticipation that the Covid-19 outbreak can be curbed.

According to Top Glove's shareholding change updates filed with Bursa Malaysia on Wednesday (May 11, 2022), Lim on Wednesday raised its direct stake in Top Glove to 27.392% after acquiring 1.5 million shares at RM1.53 each.

The filing showed that Lim also owns an indirect stake of 8.495% in Top Glove, which is the world's largest rubber glove manufacturer by production capacity.

On Thursday (May 12, 2022), Top Glove's share price fell four sen or 2.61% to RM1.49 -- the lowest level since Dec 16, 2019 when the stock closed at RM1.48.

Based on Top Glove's 8.01 billion outstanding shares, its latest closing share price of RM1.49 values the company at about RM11.93 billion. Top Glove's share price has fallen from its record high closing price of RM9.60 in October 2020, valuing the group at RM78.17 billion then. The glove maker's market capitalisation has evaporated 85% from the peak.

Top Glove's share price has been adjusted for its two-for-one bonus share issue under which about 5.4 billion new shares were listed and quoted on Bursa Malaysia and the Singapore Exchange on Sept 7, 2020, according to the company's Bursa filing on that day.

Looking back, Top Glove was closely watched as beneficiary of the Covid-19 outbreak which started in early 2020 as demand for rubber gloves, seen as a crucial personal protective equipment, surged to curb the global spread of Covid-19.

However, Covid-19-driven demand for gloves is now seen normalising as global vaccination progress leads to anticipation that the Covid-19 outbreak can be curbed.

Such sentiment is reflected in Top Glove's share price.

On Thursday (May 12, 2022), Top Glove's share price also took cue from broader market weakness as US inflation data dented world markets.

The FBM KLCI tumbled more than 1% when markets closed on Thursday (May 12, 2022) while Bursa's Technology index was the worst hit among the bourse's 30 gauges as forecast-beating US inflation dented world markets, seen taking cue from anticipation of US interest rate hikes to fight rising consumer prices.

At 5pm, the KLCI closed down 17.13 points or 1.1% to 1,538.8 while Bursa's Technology index fell 4.44% to become the worst-hit gauge in percentage terms. All 30 Bursa indices ended lower.

KLCI component Top Glove is also a constituent of Bursa's Heath Care index, which finished down 0.6%.
