Best Strategy for taking class notes?

A researcher divided college students into 3 different groups. Each group practises these 3 different methods:

Strategy A>> Review notes

The strategy that most students use is to try to write down as much as possible what the lecturer says. Then before exams, students review their notes, hoping they took good class notes.

Strategy B>> Summarize notes

Students took notes as usual, but after the lecture, used their notes to write a summary in their own words.
They identify main topic, and write a sentence about it.
Then they identify a subtopic and wrote senteces that are related to the main topic. When linked together, these created a summary of the lecture, written in students' own words.

Strategy C>> Answer Questions About Notes

Students took note as usual but, after that used their notes to ask and answer questions about the lecture material, such as..
What is the main idea of.....?
How would you use.... to.....?
What are the examples of....?
What is the difference between ..... and .....?
Students made up and answer all these questions themselves.

A week after each group watched a videotaped lecture, they were given an exam. These are the results of the average score.

Strategy A>> 34
Strategy B>> 45
Strategy C>> 51

The strategy that combines note-taking and with answering questions retain more information and perform better on xm's.

What Problems Do Over 50% of students report?

Most Common Complaint:
I read the book and went over my notes 3 times and i still got a C.

Reason they can't score:
They base their answers on what they generally know than what they specifically know

For instance, what are the names of specific persons, definitions, examples, elaboration.

How to avoid this:
To judge how well prepared you are for an xm, ask urself specific questions about the material. You can do that by taking the tests built into each end of chapters in ur textbook/ module.

Buat jgn tak buat :))

What are the best goals to set?

A way to better manage ur study time:

1.Set time goal.
Example, set 10 hrs a week or more to study, then keep track of this during the semester

2. Set General Goal
such as, study hard, stay on schedule.

3. Set specific goal
such as answering atleast 80% of the Summary Test questions at the end of each chapter

Staying motivated

What if u reached a goal?
Reward urself, such as a CD, meal, movie, or time with friends..
or give urself a positive statements; 'I'm doing really well,' or 'I'm going to get a good grade'

More On Taking Notes

Students usually make 2 kings of mistake.
a) try to write EVERYTHING the lecturer says>> impossible, confusing

b) mechanically copy down every term or concept, but dont understand, hope to learn by sheer memorization

1. write info in your own words

2. use headings or outline format, will help u better organize and remember

3. try to associate new lectures on materials u already know..
this is where we use illustartions, drawings, photos

4. as we discussed before, ask urself questions. writing the answers in ur own words will give u a better chance of remembering the material.

Remember: Go thru ur notes, ask questions, write answers in ur own words:)cgrock
