A close friend of the prominent property developer said Malaysians should not share the fake news.

EcoWorld chairman: Woman slapped by Datuk in viral video not my daughter

PETALING JAYA: EcoWorld Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Liew Kee Sin (pic) has refuted a claim that his daughter was slapped by a Datuk at a hotpot restaurant.

A close friend of the prominent property developer said Malaysians should not share the fake news.

Puan Sri Siew Yong Gnalingam also said she has been wrongly named on social media, saying she was not the one who filmed the video.
She said she does not like spicy hotpot and was not at the restaurant.

Earlier on Saturday (Jan 16), the Datuk and another suspect allegedly involved in the assault at a hotpot restaurant were released on police bail.
This comes after the police's application to extend their remand was rejected by the courts.

Both suspects were earlier brought to the Petaling Jaya Magistrate's Court at about 11am on Saturday.
It was reported previously that the assault victim has been identified as the son of a Datuk.

When contacted, Perak Chinese Assembly Hall deputy president Datuk Kwan Foh Kwai confirmed that it was his son who was slapped in the incident.

When asked about his son, Kwan declined to elaborate and said that he would leave it to the police to investigate the matter.

Two videos of the incident - one 29 seconds and the other 51 seconds long - had been posted on social media and both videos have since gone viral.

According to the initial police report, the two suspects also slapped a waitress.

However, Chinese vernacular newspapers reported that the suspect slapped the victim's girlfriend, claiming that she is Liew's daughter

In the 29-second video, the two men can be seen slapping an unidentified victim, presumably the complainant, while gesturing aggressively at him. One of them also slapped a woman as they were about to leave the restaurant.

The longer video shows one of the suspects being held back by another person as he aggressively tried to slap a man wearing a blue T-shirt.

However, as he was being pacified, he knocked down a chair before slapping a woman.

This led to another round of heated arguments with the man who was threatened earlier by one of the suspects.

The second suspect then approached the man, tried to hit him with his hand and cornered him against a wall.

The Datuk has apologised, saying that his actions were too extreme.

PETALING JAYA: The Datuk who was caught on a viral video assaulting a man and a woman at a hotpot restaurant here has apologised, saying that his actions were too extreme.

“I admit that my friend and I committed an act that was not right and was extreme. My friend and I were not rational at the time, which was why I was very angry. I felt that my dignity had been challenged by a younger person, ” the man who identified himself as Datuk Tan said in a video message that went viral on Monday (Jan 18).

Datuk Tan apologised to the man and woman, as well as Malaysians for his action.
He also issued the apology on behalf of his friend, whom he called Ang Lee.

Datuk Tan said his friend had got involved because he thought that he had been hit by the young man.
"My friend then also hit the young man. Subsequently, the fight became worse and I became even more unruly where I then slapped the woman.

"I really regret my actions as I was out of control. My friend and I were also drunk at that time. I hope that the public will not involve our families in this issue as this happened on our own accord," he said.

"I also hope that this issue will not be extended any longer as we had surrendered ourselves to the authorities. We will accept any punishment that will be charged on us. Once again I would like to apologise on what had transpired.

"I hope everyone will be able to accept our apology," he said in the video message.
Datuk Tan and his friend were released on police bail on Saturday (Jan 16) after their two-day remand order expired.

The assault, which took place at Tropicana Avenue last week was a hot topic among Malaysians as it not only involved a titled person but the alleged victims is another Datuk’s son.
Perak Chinese Assembly Hall deputy president Datuk Kwan Foh Kwai confirmed his son was slapped during the incident.
In two videos that have gone viral, two victims, including Kwan’s son were slapped.

The initial police report stated that the other person who was slapped was a waitress but Chinese vernacular newspapers reported that she is the victim’s girlfriend.
The heated argument is believed to have started after the victims complained about the noise the suspects were allegedly making at the restaurant.
