MRCB: RM180m to rejuvenate KL Sentral

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd (MRCB) will shell out close to RM180 million in its regeneration plan for Kuala Lumpur Sentral (KL Sentral), which includes landscape decks that connect to major tourist attractions.

Expanding the more than one-decade-old transport hub would entail two parts, said group managing director Datuk Mohamad Salim Fateh Din. “The first is to address the needs of the fast-changing landscape in terms of development and demands of tenants and customers, while the second entails connectivity to Muzium Negara and Lake Gardens.

“The completion target is three years,” he told a media briefing after a visit by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to KL Sentral yesterday. KL Sentral is the largest railway station in Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, group chief operating officer Imran Salim said KL Sentral has outgrown its original use, hence the need for upgraded toilets, escalators, ventilation system, security system and command centre to cope with the influx of people and services.

“In connecting to the museum and Lake Gardens, we expect a good flow of people to these attractions. Decks will be built over Jalan Damansara, surrounded by water features and kiosks for the small traders,” he said, adding that a cycling track will also be included. The KL Sentral mass rapid transit (MRT) station in front of the museum is expected to be connected to KL Sentral’s main terminal via a covered bridge.

Imran said critical to the success of the regeneration plan is a single body to manage all services within the hub. “We only manage a small part, contrary to public belief. The others are Express Rail Link and KTMB Bhd, which jointly manage 67 per cent of the operations, and MRT Corp, which will manage another 20 per cent.” MRCB has also called on the government to set up an organisation to monitor the varied operations and operators, including public utility services and retail.

The tight built-up area of KL Sentral is a constraint in coping with 180,000 transumers. The number is expected grow to 220,000 when the MRT starts operations in 2017.
