PETALING JAYA: Local users of the popular BlackBerry phone can breathe a little easier as Malaysia would not be banning the BlackBerry services for now.
Despite recent developments in several Asian countries banning BlackBerry services due to security concerns, Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said Malaysia has no issues with BlackBerry services -- from a security point of view as well as consumers complains.
"We have looked into the matter and we do not think there is any issue regarding the security or any untrusted encrypted source from BlackBerry," he said after a working visit to the National Film Development Corporation, here, this morning.
While India, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates cited national security concerns, other Asian countries cited social concerns that services such as the encrypted messenger service could enable and spread pornography.
Several countries in the Middle East and North Africa wanted access to encrypted BlackBerry communication, which has been linked to militant actions, including the 2008 Mumbai attacks that killed 166 people.
The German government has banned politicians and civil servants from using the BlackBerry. The European Union Commission had, in early August, rejected the BlackBerry in favour of Apple's iPhone and HTC smartphones.
Rais said the authorities did not deem it necessary to ban BlackBerry services at present as the public has yet to raise any concerns regarding its usage.
"However, we will continue to monitor this and if we do receive any complaints, I will request the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commision to act on it fast," he said.
