Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto has called on universities nationwide to implement a one-day-a-week work-from-home (WFH) policy for lecturers and administrative staff.

“We encourage universities to evaluate and adopt options that allow staff to work from home one day a week,” he told reporters in Jakarta on Monday.

Yuliarto outlined several measures to improve efficiency in higher education institutions, enabling lecturers and staff to adopt a weekly remote work arrangement.

He said universities could deliver lectures remotely or through hybrid models while maintaining academic quality and learning outcomes set by each study program.

He also urged the digitalization of administrative processes across both public and private universities.

“Transforming work patterns and building an effective work culture will benefit everyone. It improves efficiency and ensures more effective use of resources,” he said.

Yuliarto added that once an effective work culture is established, universities could consolidate schedules into specific days to accommodate a designated work-from-home day.

He previously issued Circular No. 2 of 2026 on adjusting work patterns within the ministry and academic activities at universities.

The circular, dated April 2, 2026, encourages universities to implement proportional remote learning schemes.

The policy targets students in their fifth semester and above, as well as postgraduate programs, while exempting courses that require physical attendance, such as laboratory work, workshops, studios, and clinical practice.

It also calls for optimizing digital platforms for academic and administrative services.
