Pakatan Rakyat stalwart Zaid Ibrahim has called for the sacking of PKR's outspoken Kulim Bandar Baharu MP Zulkifli Noordin./MKINI

PKR lawmaker challenges party leaders over ‘Allah issue’

PETALING JAYA: A defiant Zulkifli Nordin has issued a fresh challenge to his party leaders. He says he will continue talking about the “Allah” issue despite a gag order.

This is despite a warning from PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of stern action against the Ku**lim-Bandar Baharu MP if he continues to make me**dia statements about the matter.

Immediately after the PKR political bureau issued the order yesterday banning party members from making statements on the use of the word “Allah” by non-Muslims, Zulkifli declared that it was limited to his police report against PAS Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad over the same matter.

He said as a Muslim, he had the right to speak his mind on the issue.

“No one can stop me from defending Islam,” he said when contacted.

On Friday, Zulkifli lodged a report against Khalid for sedition for saying that the Selangor Non Islamic Religion (Control of Propagation Among Muslim) Enactment 1988, which forbids other religions from using the word “Allah”, was out-dated.

Zulkifli versus the rest
Comment by BARADAN KUPPUSAMY

PKR leader Zulkifli Noordin may be perceived as a champion for Islam but his obsession with religion may result in dire consequences to his party and Pakatan Rakyat.

There is no stopping PKR leader and Kulim Bandar Baru MP Zulkifli Noordin. His single-minded obsession with promoting and defending Islam – his version of it – is legendary.

He considers party colleagues and fellow Muslims who disagree with his hardline views, as political enemies and by extension, enemies of Islam.

His obsession with religion might get the best of him and with dire consequences not just for himself but also PKR and the Pakatan Rakyat coalition.

He lodged a police report on Saturday against Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad for allegedly insulting Islam and the Selangor Sultan for saying non-Muslims can use the word “Allah” and that certain Islamic enactments were outdated.

To Zulkifli the remark by Khalid as a PAS leader, amounted to “gross abuse against Islam and Islamic institutions in this country.”

He also wants PAS to investigate Khalid and expel him from the party.

Zulkifli might be an enigma to many but besides his love for Islam, he is an amiable person, a dedicated colleague and a staunch political fighter.

He was among the first to stand by and defend Pakatan adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when the former deputy prime minister was sacked and charged with corruption and sodomy in 1999.

Zulkifli remained a staunch Anwar ally through the dark reformasi years and eventually paid a heavy price for his unwavering loyalty.

He was detained under the ISA, suffered heavy financial losses when his law firm almost went bust and by his own admission, the effects of the sacrifices are still felt today.

It is for his unremitting loyalty and dedication that Anwar, who also went through tough times, finds it hard to ignore Zulkifli who struggled so much and without a slightest murmur of complain.

But for many others in PKR, DAP and even the moderate wing in PAS, lodging a police report against a fellow Pakatan colleague, Muslim and MP, is nothing short of being sacrilege.

It is the last straw for some senior leaders in PKR.

They want him silenced and possibly removed because his views and actions are hurting the PKR and the Pakatan Rakyat. “It is either us or him,” the insider said.

But Zulkifli is not one to be afraid of party censure or even expulsion. He is unlikely to waver in his views, no matter what.

And Anwar and his staunch supporter Azmin Ali, the powerful vice-president knew that.

The last time he blundered over the disruption of a inter-faith Bar Council forum which Zulkifli saw as anti-Islam, some PKR leaders complained about him but the party played along and started disciplinary action.

But nothing materialised from that disciplinary action. It died a natural death after PKR deputy president Dr Husin Ali announced the matter was resolved “internally.”

“You cannot talk about Middle Malaysia politics and still tolerate a person with Zulkifli’s narrow, hardline views,” said a senior DAP leader who requested anonymity.

“Khalid is the new Malaysia whereas Zulkifli and Selangor PAS Commissioner Datuk Dr Hasan Ali are from the past that we want to move away from,”
he said
.

But the two leaders nonetheless represent a powerful and influential past that cuts across the Malay society – a class that enjoys power, status and support as can be seen by the staying power of Hasan.

Khalid is admired for his liberalism, broadminded views and he enjoys support from non-Muslims for his equally brave stand on many issues that are close to the heart of Muslims.

He speaks sense, is logical, consistent and like Zulkifli is unafraid of the consequences. But he is the minority even in PAS – the minority that was roundly defeated in PAS elections last year.

Both Khalid and Zulkifli come from the same Muslim tradition of study, knowledge, reflection and dedication to Islam but they are poles apart in their views and approaches.

“Something, someone has to give way… we can’t let this dichotomy fester and spread and infect Pakatan Rakyat, said a PKR leader. “We have bigger issues to worry about.’’
