DARREN Ng was a member of a gang that was going to meet a rival gang at Downtown East on Oct 30, when he was fatally slashed.

This was revealed by Home Minister K Shanmugam at a police briefing on Friday.

In his first comments following two gang assaults in two weeks, Mr Shanmugam said that the attack on Ng was not a random assault but a gang fight, with two gangs seeking revenge on each other.

Likewise, the Bukit Panjang slashing was also sparked off by a fight between two gangs.

Nearly 40 suspected gang members have been arrested by the police in connection to the two cases.

GANG members have been recruiting fresh blood into their ranks outside school premises.

This was revealed in a police briefing on Friday.

RazorTV asked residents of Bukit Panjang, where two armed attacks occurred on Monday, if they noticed gangs in the schools.

Some said they have seen or heard of gangs recruiting outside secondary schools in the neighbourhood.

Mr Alex Lim, a former gang member and now a youth mentor, said that gangs usually recruit people from secondary schools, video game arcades, void decks or shopping centres.

A 26-YEAR-OLD woman was enjoying happy hour with two male friends at Ginza Pub in Yishun along Sembawang Road on Nov 10 when the unexpected happened.

She was confronted by a group of five women and one man in their late 20s, who asked if she belonged to a gang.

When she said no, the gang started attacking her with glass bottles and knives.

She suffered multiple slashes on her face, arms and legs, and was sent to the hospital.

Her two male friends were also injured while trying to protect her.

The victim said no one came to her rescue during the attack. The pub management did nothing to mediate the situation until the police and the ambulance arrived.

This attack comes after two gang attacks that have resulted in one death, 7 injured and nearly 40 arrests.

POLICE have arrested a teenager who was involved in an attack on another youth in Ang Mo Kio on Thursday.

In yet another incident of youth violence, a 17-year old , who was acquainted with the alleged attacker, also 17, was slashed on the right shoulder at Block 448, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 at about 7pm.

The victim, who left a blood trail from outside a 24-hour restaurant, where the attack took place, was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

The New Paper reported on Friday that the two youths had got into a loud dispute and a shoving match before the victim was knifed.

A police spokesman told straitstimes.com on Friday morning that the incident had nothing to do with gang activities, and investigations are ongoing.

The latest incident comes after a teen was slashed to death at Downtown East and seven others were attacked in Bukit Panjang.

TWO youths have been arrested for brandishing a knife onboard an MRT train.

The incident occurred in December 2009.

The suspects, aged 16 and 17 years, were on a train with two friends on New Year's eve when one of them took out a knife from his bag and started posing with it, while his friend took a photo.

A photo of the suspects brandishing the knife was later uploaded onto citizen journalism website Stomp.

The two teenagers have been released on bail and are still under investigation.

They are also being investigated for gang-related offences.
