Mula2 aku ingat SAMM ni geng2 penyokong tegar robert kuok, tapi rupanya ketuanya orang melayu gak... nak masuk bertanding pulak tu.

memang aku tak reti lah mainan politik ni.

sedara ni susah2 pasal syed mukhtar, ada kilang roti, atau empayar lori ke?

Viral videos winning M’sia’s young voters over, say analysts

KUALA LUMPUR — Young voters in Malaysia will be more influenced by viral online videos ahead of elections than advertisements because such clips strike a chord with them, communication analysts said yesterday.

“People get very excited because they feel a sense of ownership in social media,” former journalism lecturer Wong Chin Huat told The Malaysian Insider yesterday.

“You would not feel moved by ads. One is emotional, but the other is not ... It went viral because it addressed a concern deep down in your heart,” added the political analyst, referring to a video critical of tycoon Syed Mokhtar Al Bukhary’s apparent dominance over Malaysia’s economy.

In the video titled Sehari Dalam Hidup Rakyat Malaysia (A day in the life of Malaysians), a panda character posed as a working professional, going through the motions of everyday life with Mr Mokhtar’s name hovering over a light bulb, a teaspoon of sugar, a Proton car, rice, cooking oil and gas.

The video, which garnered more than 20,000 views since it was uploaded on YouTube last Sunday, starts with the question “Who do you work for today?”, before highlighting Mr Mokhtar’s vast business interests, from sugar to energy.

The two-and-a-half-minute video by the non-governmental organisation, Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia, ends with the definition of cronyism and the words: “It is time to end the rule of cronies. Vote for change”.

Video clips promoting either the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition or the opposition Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition have popped up on YouTube in the lead-up to what is touted to be Malaysia’s tightest general election in recent history.

Mr Wong said that clips shared on social networks like Facebook were perceived to be more credible than advertisements because they are usually distributed among friends.

“The advantage of social media is they have credibility. Money can buy you Google ads, but money cannot buy you the trust,” he said.

The BN has poured millions of ringgit into online advertisement space in websites and portals popular in Malaysia, encroaching into a territory that has been dominated by the PR due to the ruling coalition’s purported control over mainstream media.

Dr Mustafa Kamal Anuar, a media analyst, said that young people are attracted to short, snappy clips, instead of wordy analyses.

“I would imagine that it’s easy to catch the attention of the younger generation,” Dr Mustafa Kamal told the Insider.

He noted that the Democratic Action Party, an opposition component party, launched its online television station Ubah.TV recently to capitalise on Malaysia’s high Internet penetration and social media use.

Political communications analyst Mohd Baharudin Othman also noted the PR’s greater online presence and said that social media was an alternative source of information about the coalition. “It doesn’t mean that they (voters) support Pakatan, but they want information outside the government sources of information,” he told the Insider.

The communications lecturer in Universiti Utara Malaysia said, however, that popular video clips could only inform viewers, but not persuade them.

“You use it to inform. But if you want to persuade, you have to give detailed information. YouTube is only a few seconds or minutes’ long. People will get bored if it’s too long,” said Mr Baharudin.

Malaysia has one of the highest Internet and mobile phone usage in Asia, according to data from the United Nations. YouTube Malaysia is one of the country’s most visited sites with some two million unique visitors daily.

There are 13 million Facebook users, which show a 46 per cent penetration of Malaysia’s 29 million-strong population, according to social media monitoring website Socialbakers.

The country’s broadband penetration rate stood at 66 per cent out of some 6.74 million households or 21 per cent of the population in the fourth quarter of last year, based on figures from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, while smartphone ownership stood at 27 per cent last year, according to market researcher AC Nielsen.

jangan biarkan JASA menutup JENAYAH.
