Finally the hiatus for the comic series Hunter x Hunter had finally ended. We all as fans have waited for 5 whole months for the story to recommence at Chapter 281, right smack in the middle of a very important arc, possibly the greatest moment in comic history (the breaking in into the king’s palace, remember how they put the exact seconds every action took place?)
Unfortunately, this series’ mangaka, the great Togashi Yoshihiro, had been known to be ‘taking it easy’. This isn’t the first time he stopped writing for months on end since the series started in 1998, and it’s likely it isn’t GON be the last time.
Even then, when the series was put on hold for a year, HXH unbelievably still remained in the top 10 most popular manga in Japan. I myself cannot imagine how this was so.. I mean, there was no more story, so people must have been reading the old chapters or somehow it managed to attract new readers even when the story actually stopped halfway at a cliffhanger. Not to mention the quality of his drawings then were, erm, inferior (read: cincai boncai
). Only an awesome storyteller like Togashi-san could have manage to pull this off (and probably JK Rowling, but she can’t draw can she:-?).
If that’s not amazing enough, FYI the JUMP magazine had actually paid him huge advance fees for chapters that were not even yet written and had no promise of ever being completed and during which timeframe. Tomorrow, ten years from now, who knows? But because it’s HXH we’re talking about, they still handed him the yen, maybe just to avoid him from killing off the manga. Any other mangakas would have been dropped off.
Not that he needed all the cash. Record has it that last year, the mangaka who is also known for his work on Yu Yu Hakusho, was the top 10 taxpayers in the whole of Japan (not sure which year). Not to mention that his wife is quite well-off as well, being the mangaka for the Sailormoon series. This is one household that doesn’t need the double income.
The questions is right now, what was the reason for stopping so often in the middle of an already legendary series? According to the rumours, Mr. Togashi had been suffering from an illness.. some even said that he has AIDS. If that were true, it would’ve explain his ‘speed’ drawings. However, the most popular theory is ‘laziness’. I mean, this is the guy who abruptly killed off ‘Level E’ manga, just cuz he felt like it. He even admitted having those bad-habits of not finishing off what he started when he first wrote this series.
Whatever the reason, everyone is just glad to be looking forward to it again every week, for now. No matter how long and how often the story stops unfolding, how could we ever give up on ever knowing, whatever happened to Knuckles’ and Shoot’s hopeless fight, to Gon when the inhuman Pitou he wanted to kill so badly is begging for time to save an innocent human girl, to Killua’s granddad who’s taking up the most formidable opponent of all, the king, who turns out to be ‘not so bad’ (he stopped eating people didn’t he?
).
For the moment, they say that it’s only gonna be 10 chapters this time, which is hardly enough to conclude the arc, but you’ll still find me eagerly checking out the scanlations every Saturday, and whatever happens, whoever wins or loses or dies, I’m still gonna lap everything up, and you know what, it’s gonna make my day.
