Perkara itu diumumkan Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak semalam yang memaklumkan bahawa pasukan berkenaan diberi nama 1Malaysia F1 Team.
Najib berkata, projek itu melibatkan gabungan kepakaran Proton dan Lotus dengan disokong oleh Litar Antarabangsa Sepang (SIC), Persatuan Sukan Pemotoran Malaysia (MAM), NORADZ TRAVEL, Naza Motor dan AirAsia.
Najib yang juga Menteri Kewangan 1 berkata, tokoh korporat terkemuka seperti Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes, Datuk Kamarudin Meranun DATUK AZHAR SULAIMAN dan S.M Nasarudin S.M Nasimuddin turut terlibat dalam inisiatif tersebut.
