Default Ligue 1 Discussion

Ligue 1 (French pronunciation: [liɡ œ̃]), formerly known as Division 1 and sometimes referred to as Le Championnat, is the French professional league for association football clubs. It is the country's primary football competition and serves as the top division of the French football league system. Ligue 1 is one of two divisions making up the Ligue de Football Professionnel, the other being Ligue 2. Contested by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with Ligue 2. Seasons run from August to May, with teams playing 38 games each totaling 380 games in the season. Most games are played on Saturdays and Sundays, with a few games played during weekday evenings. Play is regularly suspended the last weekend before Christmas for two weeks before returning in the second week of January. Ligue 1 is one of the top national leagues, currently ranked fifth in Europe behind the English Premier League, Spanish La Liga, Italian Serie A, and the German Fußball-Bundesliga. The league is officially known as Ligue 1 Orange as it is sponsored by French telecommunications company Orange.

Ligue 1 was inaugurated on 11 September 1932 under the name National before switching to Division 1 after a year of existence. The name lasted until 2002 before switching to its current name. The current champions are Marseille, who won their ninth title in the 2009–10 season. With their title, Marseille ended a historic drought having last won the title during the 1991–92 season.

Ligue 1 is generally regarded as competently run, with good planning of fixtures, complete and consistently enforced rules, timely resolution of issues, and adequate escalation procedures of judicial disputes to national or international institutions. The league has faced three significant corruption scandals in its history (Antibes in 1933, Red Star in the 1950s, and Marseille in 1993) and has preserved its reputation every time through swift and appropriately severe punishment of the guilty parties.

Rennes climb to the summit in France

Rennes moved to the top of the Ligue 1 table for the first time in 40 years with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Toulouse at Stade de la Route de Lorient.

Romain Danze struck just before half-time to give the hosts the lead and Kader Mangane and Sylvain Marveaux put the result beyond doubt before Moussa Sissoko's consolation for Alain Casanova's side.

Gervinho's strike 10 minutes from time settled Lille's nerves as they maintained their unbeaten start to the Ligue 1 season by beating Montpellier 3-1.

Moussa Sow's first-half double, sandwiching Olivier Giroud's response from the penalty spot, put the hosts in charge at Stade Metropole.

But Montpellier looked more than capable of levelling matters until Gervinho grabbed a third for Lille.

Paris St Germain failed to build on the midweek win over Karpaty Lviv after being held to a goalless draw by Nice at the Parc des Princes.

The hosts, 2-0 winners over Lviv in the Europa League on Thursday night, were unable to find a way past inspired Nice goalkeeper David Ospina, who produced a wonderful individual display.

PSG pounded the visitors' goal but were denied time after time by Ospina.

Marseille to take legal action over De Jong tackle

French club Marseille have revealed that they are to take legal action against Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong after he broke the leg of their on-loan midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa.

De Jong has been roundly criticised in the media for his tackle on Ben Arfa against Newcastle last Sunday, which broke the Frenchman's tibia and fibula and, although the incident went unpunished by the referee or the Premier League, Marseille are keen to make the midfielder pay for his actions.

''We will file a claim against De Jong. It's about getting rid of this type of individual from European grounds,'' Marseille president Jean-Claude Dassier told French television programme Telefoot.

Dassier also promised to offer support Ben Arfa in his recovery after he underwent successful surgery last week, saying: ''Ben Arfa asked our medical staff to help and we will do everything we can to help him, obviously.''

De Jong was dropped from the Netherlands squad as punishment for the tackle by coach Bert van Marwijk, but Ben Arfa's agent claims that he has yet to offer an apology to the player.

"De Jong hasn't been in touch at all," said Simon Stanford. "Brian Marwood, who is a top-class professional person, sent a note from Manchester City saying everyone wished him a speedy recovery and sent a gift, but that's it.

"A visit from De Jong wasn't put to him. Brian wanted to visit but Hatem was on morphine at the time. The facts of the matter are he hasn't been in touch and he hasn't apologised. Brian Marwood has been in touch, but not De Jong."

Default Toulouse goalkeeper Pele out for six months

Toulouse goalkeeper Yohann Pele has been ruled out for at least six months because of a blockage in his lung.

The 27-year-old has been diagnosed with a bilateral pulmonary embolism after being hospitalised on Tuesday morning.

A statement on the club's website said: "Toulouse goalkeeper Yohann Pele has suffered a bilateral pulmonary embolism. His unavailability is a minimum of six months. All at TFC wish the player a speedy recovery a lot of courage."

Pele has been plagued by injury and health problems since joining Toulouse from from Le Mans before the start of last season.

He suffered a hand injury and a ruptured posterior ligament, before suffering from phlebitis, a vein inflammation which can lead to a pulmonary embolism, in the summer.
