MALACCA: A man, accused of pretending to be a female doctor to treat patients, has been charged with impersonation.

Hasdi Jamal Arifin, 26, from Pandan Mewah, Selangor, claimed trial to the offence of cheating by impersonation which carries a maximum seven years’ jail term or fine or both upon conviction.

The bespectacled Hasdi looked calm when the charge was read to him before magistrate Ida Rahayu Sharif yesterday.

He spoke softly when appealing to the court to reduce the bail of RM5,000.

Hasdi was unrepresented while none of his friends or family members were seen inside the courtroom.

“I have only RM800 left in my bank account, I can’t raise the money. Please lower the amount,” he appealed.

The court then granted a bail of RM3,000 and fixed May 17 for re-mention to allow Hasdi to appoint a lawyer while Insp Suhari Haron prosecuted.

Based on the statement of fact, Hasdi allegedly committed the offence on Jan 15 at Dr Norman Clinic Sdn Bhd at No 28, Jalan MJ1, Taman Merdeka Jaya, Batu Berendam, here by deceiving Norman Mohd Norwawi, 41, by submitting falsified documents pertaining to academic qualifications that convinced him to pay out a salary of RM8,280.

He is accused of having done so by using the name Dr Norlizulaikha Jamaluddin.
